CREATE, SHARE AND CONNECT
Why a Shutterfly photo book is helpful for those with Alzheimer's, caregivers and loved ones
Research shows that if an individual with Alzheimer's and a family member
or friend look at photos together, it can be an effective way to connect and
revisit important people and events in their life. In fact, there are benefits to
patients and caregivers: decreasing isolation and withdrawal in patients and
lower stress for caregivers.
TIPS FOR CREATING A BOOK
TIPS FOR SHARING A BOOK
Make it an activity
Work with the individual to create the book. Share
memories and conversation as you put it together.
Keep the design simple
Use one or two photos per page, so that the photos
are easy to focus on.
Help spark recognition
Create a separate page for each family member
photographed with the patient.
Place photos in chronological order
Organize them around key moments and happy occasions.
This will assist with connection and engagement.
Enlist others
Such as friends, family members and former coworkers to
get a range of photos from different perspectives.
Move at a comfortable pace
Follow cues from the individual to gage their interest
level. Spend more time on the photos that spark
interest or conversation, and move on if they do not.
Engage in open-ended questions
How were you feeling in that photo? Tell me more
about this picture. Tell me about your brother.
Talk about your memories too
As part of the conversation, share your own memories
and feelings when looking at the book.
Look at it again and again
Take the time to frequently revisit memories using the
photo book. Discuss different photos each time.
Connect, don't correct
Sharing a photo book is about sharing memories and
making a connection.
